The Pope's Monthly Intentions for 2019

Each year, the Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention each month.

AUGUST

Families, Schools of Human Growth

That families, through their life of prayer and love, become ever more clearly “schools of true human growth.”

Catholic Education Week

Thank you to all who participated in Catholic Education Week for 2019.

CEW_logo.jpg
All events were joyfully celebrated withmany voices, one spirit’. These included the Prep to Year 2 Liturgy, the Southern Deanery Mass and activities from Years 3 to 6 and we especially thank those who were able to join us in the Heart of St Clare’s Garden for our special Grandparents’ Morning Tea. Our spirit of Welcome, Community and Hospitality was very visible with Year 6 students warmly welcoming families and circulating with food. Staff too were enjoying mingling with families and assisting with hospitality. Thank you also to all families who helped with catering as well as those who helped in any way to make this important celebration a success. The week was completed on Friday with Year 4 leading the school in a prayer assembly liturgy, before staff celebrated the wonderful news on Friday evening, that Chris Edwards had most deservedly won the Docemus Primary Teacher’s Award for 2019.

Upcoming Important Feast Days on the Catholic Liturgical Calendar

During this week, several important Feast Days on the Catholic Liturgical Calendar occur. Today we celebrate “The Transfiguration of the Lord.”

Matthew says Jesus "was transfigured before them. His face shone as the sun: his garments became white as snow". (Mt 17:1-6)

Transfiguration.JPG

The date for this feast – 6th August – seems to have been chosen in order to be exactly forty days before 14th September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, because of a tradition that the Transfiguration took place forty days before the crucifixion.

St_Mary_of_the_Cross.JPG
On Thursday, 8th August we celebrate St Mary of the Cross. Mary Helen MacKillop (15 January 1842 - 8 August 1909), also known as Saint Mary of the Cross, was an Australian Roman Catholic nun who, together with Father Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and a number of schools and welfare institutions throughout Australasia with an emphasis on education for the poor, particularly in country areas. Since her death she has attracted much veneration in Australia and internationally.

On 17 July 2008, Pope Benedict XVI prayed at her tomb during his visit to Sydney for World Youth Day 2008. On 19 December 2009, Pope Benedict XVI approved the Roman Catholic Church's recognition of a second miracle attributed to her intercession. She was canonised on 17 October 2010 during a public ceremony in St Peter's Square at the Vatican. She is the only Australian to be recognised by the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.
