St.Clare’s Year 6 Banana Bag Project

In term 2, some of the Grade 6’s applied themselves to compete in the Tully Show’s annual Banana Bag Clothes Making Competition. Every lunchtime, we were working with Mrs Morton to make all of our Disney characters. We entered two groups in the ‘Group Section’. The groups each consisted of six Disney Characters. In one group we had Eve Zonta as ‘Tinkerbell’, Eliza Smith as ‘Rapunzel’, Meg Chappel as ‘Sleeping Beauty’, Mia Uitenweerde as ‘Merida (Brave) and Ava Durighello as ‘Moana’ accompanied by her trusty mate, Alex Salas ‘Maui’. In the second group entered, we had Drew Wilkinson as ‘Ariel’, Jarrod Vipiana as ‘Prince Eric (Ariel’s Land Friend), Holly Maifredi as ‘Belle’, Brianna Liddle as ‘Jasmine’, Danielle Kerr as ‘Anna’ and last but not least Elise Kleinhans as ‘Elsa’.

We were very successful, placing second and winning $220. This money will contribute to our class graduation for the end of this year. This was a great experience for all the participants who worked very hard every day trying to complete the outfits. A big thank you to Mrs. Morton for supporting us throughout this wonderful experience, and of course we would like to congratulate all participants who made outfits and modelled at the ‘Banana Bag Parade’.

Year 6 Technologies Unit calls for students to design solutions for prescribed contexts using sustainability considerations for success criteria.  After much discussion and development of the understanding of sustainability, it was decided that a vertical garden was possible.  Students could utilize limited space, be cost effective and enhance environmental outcomes.  The idea became reality with the use of four pallets, recycling pots, a bag of potting mix and a touch of ingenuity.  Of course, free water from our abundant supply in Tully was very beneficial!

This has been a wonderful practical learning experience for the students.  Daily comments include:

‘learning about sustainability at school is great for our future’

‘this teaches us how to care for a garden’

‘we can pick the vegetables and add them to our salads and sandwiches for lunch’

‘we’re getting to know the plants – rocket, lettuce, strawberries, eggplant’

‘let’s try French leaves – chicory, chervil, celery leaves and rocket’

Our goal is to continue growing and harvesting our crops to appreciate not only the learning but the nutritious, homegrown fruits and vegetables that provide the palette with truly natural flavours free from additives and preservatives.
