Dear St. Clare’s Community,
Dear St. Clare’s Community,
We are now at the halfway point of Term 3 and we have some more amazing extracurricular activities coming our way. Our teacher librarian, Mrs. Penny Irvine has been working extremely hard to put together Science Day for us. Penny was also successful in receiving a grant from the Queensland Government this year for increasing awareness around sustainability. The Year 5 & 6 classes have been working in partnership with some external organisations and taking a closer look at water quality in our area. This Thursday students from Year 5 & 6 will be visiting 3 different sites and later in the year will travel to the Great Barrier Reef to investigate the quality of water in our environment. This Friday, 16th August, is our Science Day! Students are welcome to come dressed up in any way related to Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.
The long awaited ordination ceremony for the Bishop of Cairns will be held on Thursday 15th August. Our school captains, William & Jace and I will attend this very special event at St. Monica’s Cathedral in Cairns on Thursday evening. We are looking forward to Bishop elect Joseph Caddy joining our Diocese. The ordination will also be live streamed from St. Clare’s Church - all are welcome, please contact the parish for information.
Next Thursday, 22nd August, is our Book Week dress up day. We will have a whole school parade at 8:40am. Please join us if you are able.
The Fete is fast approaching, and a very dedicated team is working non-stop to prepare for this wonderful event. Please read the update from the Fete Committee further down in this newsletter. A few helpers are required here and there on the night, so if you can spare an hour or two on the night, get in touch. Raffle ticket sales are going strong, and a huge thank you to Nancy Marsilio, who spends countless hours on behalf of St. Clare’s, selling tickets. If you still have ticket books, sold or unsold, please return them to school with your child as soon as possible.
Over the coming weeks (Weeks 7 & 8) classroom teachers will be available for interviews. Information on how to book a time was sent home yesterday. I strongly encourage everyone to book in to chat with your child’s teacher, these times a great opportunity to share in your child learning journey.
A gentle reminder for students on buses. If you have any changes for the bus, please ring through to the office with these messages before 2:30pm. The bus roll for each day is generated by the office and classroom teachers are then notified of these changes. We do ask that you do not message teachers for bus changes. The reason for this is they may get missed during the teaching day. Or if your child’s teacher happens to be away, a relief teacher will not receive the message.
The School Board has recently reviewed the following policies:
- Camps & Excursions
- Communicable Diseases
These updated policies are included in this newsletter for your information.
Sent to Principal’s Office
Once again I have been fortunate to see some amazing examples of student learning. A huge thanks to our wonderful staff for providing engaging activities and support for our students. Also, hats off to all the students of St. Clare’s - you truly try your best in learning - well done!
A reminder that Friday 30th August is a pupil free day. All staff will be participating in professional development for the day.
Blessings for the week ahead.

This Thursday August 15 sees a significant event in our diocese with the episcopal ordination of Cairns’ 8th Bishop, Reverend Joe Caddy. This special event will be live streamed at St Clare’s Church in Tully or parishioners may also livestream from home. For information on how to register to attend at St Clare’s Church, or access the livestream link from home, please see the link here.
It is with much sadness that we heard of the loss of Fr Hilary Flynn on Saturday August 3. Fr Hilary was our parish priest prior to Fr Joby’s appointment and will be missed by many. Hilary’s requiem mass was held yesterday at St Monica’s Cathedral and he will be laid to rest at Martyn Street Cemetery. We hope to hold a memorial mass for Fr Hilary at St Clare’s Church later in the term.
St Clare’s Feast Day falls on Saturday August 17 this year. Our school will celebrate our patron saint during mass on Monday August 19 at 10am. This will be followed by a cake for our whole school at first break. Families and friends are welcome to join us for mass.
Who Was St Clare of Montefalco?
The patron saint of our school is St Clare. She lived in a small Italian village called Montefalco. She is also known as St Clare of the Cross.
Clare was born in 1268 and as a young 6 year old girl, went to live at a convent with her sister Joan (who was the head Augustinian nun in their area). Clare lived a secluded life and spent time only with other nuns or religious men in the monastery. Together, they would spend long hours praying together.
After Joan had passed away, the other nuns decided that Clare would be the best person to lead them. Although she did not want to, she agreed. Clare was known as a wise leader who governed with love and holiness. Her advice was frequently sought after and almost always correct. Even priests and bishops came to her for guidance. On August 17, 1308 Clare took ill and passed away. It is believed that after her death, she was found to have an inscription of a cross of her heart. This represented her commitment to prayer and her passion and devotion to Christ.
With Blessings,

Term 3 Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will take place during Week 7 and 8 of this term. Please check the dates carefully for each teacher as not all are doing interviews on the same days.
This is a great opportunity to check in with your class teacher and discuss your child’s progress. Login information with your unique PIN code was sent home yesterday and the PTO website is now open for bookings. Please check your child’s bag if you did not receive this.
If you recently had a meeting with the class teacher to sign PLPs or Intervention Plans, you may not require another interview at this time. As always, contact your class teacher if you are unsure. Any login difficulties can be forwarded to cedwards@cns.catholic.edu.au
Thanks,
Chris
Emotional Literacy
Working on our emotional literacy gives us opportunities to develop our ability to understand and express different emotions. When we improve our emotional literacy, we can work towards recognising our own feelings and our ability to manage them. This allows us to cope with different life situations, such as managing conflict, making friends, coping in difficult situations and being resilient when dealing with change.
Whole Family Activity:
Feelings Charades
- Gather together as a family, this might be around the dinner table, lounge room, around the fire outside.
- Take turns to act out a feeling or emotion. Use your face and body language to act this out, For example: Make an angry face and stamp your feet
- Other family members need to guess the feeling/emotion.
- After someone has guessed the feeling/emotion, have family members discuss a time they have felt this way before and why. If it was a negative emotion, how did they overcome it?
Family Habit Builder:
Around the dinner table, ask everyone to share a feeling they felt during that day. Discuss how they dealt with that feeling and then discuss and share strategies you could use when faced with particular feelings.
