Dear St. Clare’s Community,
Welcome to the 2025 school year. Even with the weather conditions, we have had a wonderful start to a new school year! It is great to be back and see all the smiles and hear all about how the holidays were spent. We welcome our new staff, Rochelle Lee Bow (Year 4) and Jonathon Hughes (HPE). And of course welcome back to all our staff from a well deserved break.
It has been a challenging week for many with the weather. We have a number of families and staff that have been impacted by the very wet weather. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers, not only those in our community but also those in Cardwell, Ingham, Townsville and surrounding areas. Please continue to monitor your area and do not travel if it is unsafe to do so. We will take each day as it comes at school. While every effort will be continued to be made to operate as normal, there may be days that alternate learning arrangements will need to be actioned. Again, I would like to acknowledge our amazing staff who have been extremely flexible and supportive with changes that have had to be made.
Photos
A reminder that any photos taken by parents & carers, at school events, such as Assembly, Sports Days and Free Dress, can only include your own children. Do not share/post any photos that contain students other than your own.
Before and After School Care
You may be aware that Big Gumboots have started a before and after school care service.
Any parents that wish to enrol can use this link. https://prodadmin.myxplor.com/enrollment_v2/centre/Ct4WhWNVDxYau2JNx2Ci3g . You will need a CCS/CRN number. For further information please contact Kevin 0409878352.
Junior Years Playground
Our very generous P&F have funded a new play structure for our Preps and Year 1 students. This should be installed in the Easter Holiday break when the weather clears up.
We cannot wait to see the finished product!
Students on buses
For families that use the bus services, if you have not already sent through the days your children are on the bus, could you please do so as soon as possible. It is extremely important we know which days students are catching the bus home. Also, if your child is no longer catching a bus - please let the office know.
From time to time you may need to let us know about changes to these days - please ring the office with any changes, before 2pm if possible.
Drop off & Pick-Up
Supervision for students begins at 8:20 am. All students arriving before this time are to remain seated in the eating area until they are dismissed. We ask that students arrive no earlier than 8am if possible. I appreciate that earlier drop offs are required from time to time due to appointments. Please let us know if you need to drop off significantly earlier than usual.
Please be mindful that the pick up zone along Mars Street is a no stopping zone. If your child requires assistance to get in the car, or with seatbelts, please park elsewhere and walk into the school to collect them. If your child is not ready for collection, or the pick up zone is full, please do a lap around the block. We need to be careful not to block Mars Street to other traffic using the area.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns and I look forward to catching up with you all over time.
Blessing for the weeks ahead,
Karran Burzacott

Class Visits with Fr Joby
Thank you to Fr Joby who will be spending time with each of our classes over the next 2 days while they visit the church. This is a great opportunity for our students to get to know Fr Joby a little better and have the freedom to find answers to any questions that they may have about our church and its practices.
Opening Mass
Our first official liturgical event of the year will be held in St Clare’s Church on Wednesday February 12 at 9am. We will gather in the church as a whole school community and our Year 6 children will receive their School Leader badges on this day. All families are welcome to join us for mass, and afterwards, families are invited to stay for morning tea, while the students will return back to class. If you plan on staying for morning tea, it would be wonderful if you could drop off a plate to share at the tuckshop before mass.
Jubilee Year - Pilgrims of Hope
A Jubilee is a special year of grace and conversion, involving prayer, pilgrimage and sacramental repentance, held every 25 years, or during other years as called for by the Pope. Through a series of rituals, acts and commitments, the goal of a Jubilee year is to inspire and encourage holiness of life among the faithful and therefore to strengthen the Church’s witness to God’s loving mercy in and for the world.
The word “jubilee” is derived from the Hebrew word jobel, which means “ram’s horn”; since it was precisely that horn which was used as a trumpet, whose sound indicated to everybody the beginning of the jubilee year.
With Blessings,
IT Permissions
All parents were emailed a permission slip to enable the use of DIBELS screeners for reading. Please check your email if you haven’t already completed this permission.
Preps and new students have also been emailed a range of permissions for IT applications such as Reading Eggs and Seesaw. Students are unable to access these apps or websites until permission is granted.
Please discuss this with your class teacher if you are unsure.
NAPLAN
Although school has just returned, we are already preparing for the NAPLAN tests for Years 3 and 5 which begin in Week 7 of this term. Please read through the attached NAPLAN Information for Parents and Carers and contact your class teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Returning to school after the holidays, or starting school for the first time, can be a big change for both kids and parents.

Catholic School Fee Discount for 2025
Dear Parents/Carers
In 2025 Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Cairns will provide a discount on tuition fees for holders of means-tested Health Care and Pensioner Concession Cards.
The discount applies to tuition fees only and not to school levies and charges.
This year for term one and two a discount of 70% on tuition fees will apply to holders of eligible cards.
The cards must be current and list as dependents, the students for whom the discount is sought.
Parents and carers should now present their eligible card to the school office for verification. The office secretary will make a copy and provide a Health Care Card Tuition Fee Discount Scheme Form for the Parent/Carer to complete. The fee discount will then be applied to tuition fees for term one school fee for 2025.
For families with children at other Cairns Catholic Schools; this process will be repeated for each school. The discount arrangement will expire on the expiry date of the card or at the end of the school year.
Parents/Carers receiving the discount have a duty to inform the school of any renewal or change in eligibility cards.
Families seeking a discount on tuition fees must visit the school office to verify and copy their Heath Care/Pension Concession Card and complete the Health Care Card Tuition Fee Discount Scheme Form no later than next Thursday, 6th February in order for the discount to be applied to Term 1 school fees.
For those who applied in 2024 a form was completed in the office and a copy of HCC card was taken for their 2025 application. For those with an expiring card (end of 2024) please come into the school office to complete a new form. A copy of new HCC card is required by this Thursday.
Thank you to those who have completed their forms for 2025.
IMPORTANT: Once the Fees are generated, unfortunately we are unable to process any claims for the respective term. Full fees for that term will be charged. (no credit can be done for that term).
Please make sure you come into the school office and complete the form with your HCC card by next Thursday.
If you have any questions, please feel free to phone (40659550) the school office.
Emergency transport forms were given out last Thursday 30th January.
It is very important these forms are returned as soon as possible.
Thankyou
