Dear Parents and Carers,
As we come to the close of another school term we all look back at the wonderful experiences our students have had this term, both academically and extra-curricular. To all staff, students and families I wish you a wonderful spring vacation.
This week some our Yr 5 & 6 students will compete in the Jim Graham Football in Innisfail on Friday. Thank you to all parents who are assisting with transport for these events and helping with managing teams. We wish our students a great experience and the best of luck for their games.
Students in Yrs 3-6 will have an intraschool touch football competition this Friday. Students in Yrs 3-6 are asked to wear their Cooby/Woomera shirts this Friday.
Our P-2 students are excited about their U8’s day tomorrow and staff are busy getting ready for fun activities and some outdoor challenges. The theme this year ties in beautifully with our nature playground. Students are invited to wear casual dress this Wednesday.
Staffing Updates
This week, Chris Edwards and Gita Sima are both on Long Service Leave. Cherie Jenkins will be teaching Yr 6 and Zanelle Collins will be teaching Yr 2 this week.
We currently have a few teaching positions advertised for Term 4 and for 2021 positions.
Miss Kiralee Phelps has resigned from her position at St. Clare’s and this leaves a vacancy for a Prep teacher for Term 4. We thank Mrs Paula Brumley who has taught our Prep class since May this year.
Last week I emailed all parents regarding Kathy Kennedy extending her leave this year and of her resignation from APRE at the end of the 2020 school year. Her part time teaching position in Yr 4 for Term 4 is currently advertised as well as the APRE position commencing in 2021. Please see further in this newsletter for a letter from Kath to our school community.
Parents of Prep and Yr 4 will be advised about the Term 4 positions as soon as appointments have been made.
Teaching positions for 2021 are also being advertised. We have the following positions available for next year:
- One full time permanent teaching position
- One full time contract teaching position
- One part time teaching position
COVID updates
All families were sent an email from Bill Dixon last week with an update. We continue to keep an eye on what is happening in the southern parts of Australia and pray for our far northern community to stay safe and healthy. If there are any urgent updates during the school holidays we will use all communication methods to advise parents of this. It is advisable not to travel to any known areas of concern.
Please remember that term three finishes this Friday September 18th. We will resume for our fourth term after the Queen’s Birthday holiday. Term 4 commences on Tuesday October 6th.
Have a peace filled vacation with your families,
Narelle Harney
Dear Parents
Due to ongoing health issues, it is with great sadness that I have made the very difficult decision to resign from my position as APRE and Year 4 teacher and will not be returning to St Clare’s school this year. Thank you for all your support and friendship throughout the last three and half years and I look forward to seeing you all from time to time. Mike, my husband and I intend to continue to enjoy being part of the Mission Beach/Tully community which we have come to love.
Take care, Kath Kennedy
Congratulations to the children who received the Holy Spirit in Confirmation last Tuesday evening and then had their First Holy Communion on Sunday. Both of these were beautiful celebrations and children were excited to be able to celebrate their Initiation Sacraments along with their family and friends. Thank you to Tania Gilbert for her leadership and for all those involved in the ministries to make the celebrations so special and memorable. We were blessed to have Fr Kerry Costigan celebrate the Sacraments at St Clare’s Parish.
Under 8’s day is being held tomorrow for the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. The theme for 2020 is Nature Play so this presents a fantastic opportunity to take part in all sorts of exciting nature play and outdoor learning activities, to get our students active and engaged.
Children can come to school in free dress for the day. They will be involved in many nature based activities during the morning session. In the middle session they will have running races and novelty events with Mr Russell (weather permitting).
Students are to bring in their school lunchbox as per usual.

Academic Award - Week 9 Term 3
The under 12 Jim Graham Cup Rugby League Side has been busy preparing for this Friday’s carnival at Innisfail Brothers. The boys played extremely well in their narrow loss against Innisfail State College last Friday in a trial game. This game should set them up for a big carnival next week where they will play 5 games against schools from the Cairns Diocese.
Due to the Covid pandemic some of the usual term 4 school sporting events such as Super 8’s cricket and Billy Slater League Tag are still yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned for more information on these events. One big event I can confirm is the St. Clare’s school swimming carnival which will be held on Friday November 27th. The students will be school swimming as per usual in their P.E lessons from week 2 -7 in the lead up to this.
Book Week 17th – 23rd of October 2020
Students from Prep – Yr 6 showcase some of the fantacstic Australian Books in our library that have been shortlisted for ‘Book of the Year’ awards by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
Book Week 2020
The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week will be celebrated from the 17th-23rd of October 2020. In Book Week, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, and Australian authors and illustrators. Students at St Clare’s have been busy exploring the wonderful books that have made the shortlist for the prestigious CBCA Book of the Year Awards. St Clare’s will be joining in the Book Week fun with a Book Character Dress Up Parade in Week 3 of Term 3, on Tuesday, 20th of October. The theme of the parade is ‘Curious Creatures’. It is a great theme, and one that is easy to create a simple dress up costume around. Please start talking to your children about the curious creatures in the books that they enjoy and use these conversations to help them think of ideas for a ‘curious creature’ costume for our Book Week Book Character Dress Up Parade. Find out more about some of the curious creatures found in the books shortlisted for book of the year at https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2020
Happy Reading!

Changes for School Fee Account
Additional Acount Holder for School Fee account -
AAH has been updated to our accounts system which will begin in term 4. This will result in the term fee statements, invoices and receipts being emailed to each Account Holder.
In the case where there is joint and several fee responsibility for more than one person, the fee payment invoice will be emailed to both account holders. The fee statement will be emailed to the email address that the school currently holds for each account holder.
Please ensure the school holds your most current email address and contact the school office (40659550) if you have any queries.
