Dear St Clare's Community,
As we come to the end of Term 3 and look forward to spending time with loved ones over the school break, we reflect on the shared experiences we have been part of this term. Of course, the fete has been a highlight! The time and effort put into bringing an event like the fete together can not be understated. It takes great commitment from our whole community to make these events happen in such a spectacular way. As usual the term has been jam packed, we have been involved in Athletics, Cricket, Rugby & Netball on the field, and welcomed students from St. Rita’s to take part in the public speaking competition. Book Week and NAIDOC activities, visits from the Fire Brigade, students involved in the Sacramental Program, St. Clare’s Feast Day, a visit from Andrew Chinn, as well as all our usual learning!
Term 4 looks just as exciting - Year 4, 5 & 6 will all go on their camps in the first few weeks of term and our Water Safety Program will begin, culminating with the Swimming Carnival in Week 8, just to mention a few.
Staffing Updates
This week, Gita Sima is on Long Service Leave. Korma Byrne will be teaching in the Prep classroom.
Sadly, we are farewelling Paula Brumley at the end of the week. Paula has been at St. Clare’s this term in a support teacher role. We will miss her guidance and choreography skills immensely as she once again heads back home to family.
We welcome back from leave Jess Lang. Jess will return to Year 4, working Wednesday, Thursday & Friday and Amanda Baston will remain with us in Year 4, working Monday and Tuesday.
Finally, to all staff, students, parents and our community, all the best for the break. I hope the weather shines for us and we all have the opportunity to enjoy the amazing backyard we are lucky to have in this part of the world.
Term Four commences on Tuesday October 4th.
Sincerest blessings,
Karran Burzacott
Principal
Welcome Community Hospitality
Last week, our Year 6 class was visited by Anna Jimenez, the Director of Catholic Missions in our diocese. Anna spent time outlining the role of Catholic Missions in assisting the underprivileged in our world and suggesting opportunities where some of our students could act on this need. The Year 6 class decided that they would like to embrace the Socktober Challenge next term to raise funds that can be then donated back to Catholic Missions. Socktober draws on Human Dignity, Solidarity, Common Good, Preferential Option for the Poor, Stewardship of Creation, Promotion of Peace, and Participation and Subsidiarity among others. More information about our fundraising will be available next term.
As you would be aware, Queen Elizabeth II moved on to eternal life recently. The Queen was a wonderful role model in so many ways and it was widely known that she attributed her strong faith to her success in her role as a leader. I would like to leave you with one of her quotes that I believe resonates with many of us.
“I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new beginning. I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God!” (Queen Elizabeth II, 2002)
With Blessings

Public Speaking Competition:
On Tuesday 6th September, 3 students from St Rita’s at South Johnstone came to St Clare's with their Principal Mr Hoare to compete in the first ever St Clare’s and St Rita’s Public Speaking Competition. Sophie, Amber and Evie (from Year 5 and 6) represented our school, after their wins earlier in the year in the public speaking competition.
All the students presented a speech on The Greatest Invention Of All Time and did an amazing job. Mr Hoare, Mrs Burzacott and Mrs Byrne reported that it was a tough competition to judge and they were so proud of the students involved and their speeches.
Congratulations to the students:

“The Heart”
Stay tuned for Issue 2 of The Heart School Magazine coming soon. A small group of students from Year 3-6 have been working on articles, puzzles and stories to fill the pages of the next Issue during the term. They have been working very hard and challenging themselves to come up with interesting and engaging work. I can not wait to share their work with you.
Lego Robotics
This term a small group of Year 2 and 4 students have been participating in a Lego Robotics group. Henry, Billy, Eden and Christopher have had a couple of lessons to learn about the Lego and functions of the moving parts. It most definitely challenges us and makes us think. The students also have to work collaboratively to build using Lego and code using the Lego Spike app on the iPad. Robotics and Coding involves developing higher order thinking skills, problem solving skills, communication, team work, persistence and resilience. The students have loved having the opportunity to participate in the group and I look forward to sharing their progress and robots next term.

Fifteen students from Years 5 and 6 attended the Sr Mary Mills Netball Carnival in Cairns last Friday 9th September. The two teams displayed great netball skills and sportsmanship while experiencing some wins, draws and losses throughout the day! We are very grateful to St. Gerard Magella for organising such a fabulous carnival. We also extend a huge thanks to Alicia Johnston for umpiring, Kelly Slattery, Tegan Duiker, Rachael Hodgson, Kerrie Waters for scoring, coaching and providing transport. Congratulations to all of the girls who competed. It was a fabulous display of high quality netball with great technique and skills. An extra big thank you to Mrs Jenkins for coordinating this event and providing this opportunity to our students.
Peninsula Softball
Congratulations to Annika Duiker who recently travelled to Ipswich to compete at the Queensland Softball State Championships. Annika represented the Peninsula region and played very well. It is a wonderful achievement to be selected to play at this level. Well done Annika!
Cassowary Coast Cricket Blast Competition
St Clare’s contested the Cassowary Coast School Cup on the 1st of September in Innisfail. The team, which included Ben Langdon, Sahib Singh, Chase Frumento, Nollie Uitenweerde, William Robertson, Saxon Solien, Seb Di Mauro and Jonah Wilcox won 3 of their 4 games to progress through to the finals in Cairns in Term 4. Highlights of the tournament were Saxon’s double hat-trick (4 wickets in 4 balls), and Sahib’s hattrick (3 wickets in 3 balls). Congratulations boys and we wish you all the best at the next level in Cairns next Term. A big thank you to Mrs Burzacott and Jake Robertson for coaching and managing the team on the day and thank you to the parents who assisted with transport and the team on the day.

Rugby 9's
On the 1st of September our U11 and U12 rugby league stars took on Tully SS in the Rugby 9's final. The boys played exceptionally well and used their speed and skill to break through the opposition and score four tries. Unfortunately Tully SS managed to just take out the win scoring five tries. Thank you to Mrs Chappel and Mr Nona for all of their work with coaching and managing this team and a special mention to Mrs Lizzio, Brendan Slattery and John Clifford for all of their guidance and support as well as Anthony Emmi for supporting this competition through the local club facilities and refereeing all of the games.
Kind Regards,
Kate Mason
