Dear St. Clare’s Community,
With Mother's Day this weekend, we take time to honour the special women in our lives who have loved and nurtured us unconditionally. We recognise the incredible impact they have had on our lives. They have provided us with support, guidance, and endless amounts of love. On their special day, let's take the time to show our appreciation and gratitude for all that they do. Happy Mother's Day! For all our mums and those we hold dear, I hope you had a lovely Mothers Day on Sunday.2024 Feedback Surveys
All parents and staff will be invited via email from Cairns Catholic Education Services to complete the survey,as well as all students in Years 5, 6, 8 and 11. This survey allows schools to gather important and useful information to inform future planning.
We estimate that the survey will take 20 – 30 minutes to complete. All surveys are anonymous.
On the 20th May parents, staff and students (in Year 5 & 6) will receive an email with full details and instructions for the completion of the survey, including their link to the survey. Your feedback is appreciated and I encourage you to take part.
Sent to the Principal's Office
Last week I was very fortunate to have some visitors showing off some amazing sentence writing. These students have been working on taking a very simple sentence and ‘bumping’ it up to create some very descriptive sentences. Well done! I very much enjoyed reading them.
Blessings for the weeks ahead

Faith Knowledge Community Respect
I have had the pleasure of working with a number of Year 4 students from the area during this year’s Sacramental Program. On Sunday May 19, this group of children will be receiving their First Eucharist and Confirmation. This will take place at St Clare’s Church at 9am with a morning tea to follow. Please feel free to come along in support of these young people.
As Mother’s Day approaches, we would like to extend an invitation to all of the mothers within our school community to join us on Friday morning for a shared morning tea. May we all continue to look to Mary as our guide to be mothers who support our children endlessly and value the importance of relationship and connection in this ever changing world.
Loving God,
You have loved us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) You have loved us even more as a mother loved her child. Today, we give you thanks and praise for the gift of mothers.
We pray for the mothers-to-be, who are just beginning to be the bearers of new life in them, may they welcome their forthcoming child with loving anticipation and joy.
We pray for the young mothers, may they cherish their child with tender care and unconditional love.
We pray for the mothers who are separated from their children especially because of war, poverty, conflict, violence and for any other reasons. Comfort them, strengthen their hope, and let them feel your loving embrace that wipes every tear away.
We pray for all Mother-figures, those who have loved, surrounded and shaped us with motherly care and compassion.
We especially pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us. Their sacrifices and care gave us a glimpse of the extent of your love for us.Thank you for them.
Grant health, blessings, and well-being for those of our mothers who are still alive.
We also remember those mothers who are no longer with us.
While they live forever in our hearts and memory grant them eternal rest and reward for their labours.
Amen.
With blessings,
Sharon Chappel

Empathy
Working on empathy helps us to identify, understand and feel what another person is feeling. When we show empathy or we do something kind for someone else our brain releases oxytocin. This leads to increasing our self-esteem/confidence, energy levels, positivity and overall happiness.
Whole Family Activity:
Neighbourhood Kindness Challenge
As a family, choose an act of kindness from the list below that you would like to do for a neighbour or family friend. Each family member can select one to commit to, or you can choose to do one together.
- Cook them something delicious like a cake, hotbread, or cookies.
- Write a note to put in their letter box thanking them for being a great neighbour or friend.
- Design them a Thank You card.
- Pick or buy some flowers to deliver to them.
- Choose a little plant from your garden to give them.
- Make them a gift from things around your house.
- Offer to do a job for them, like wash their car or water their garden.
- Offer to take their pets for a walk.
- Invite them over for afternoon tea.
- Invite them on a walk.
- Recommend one of your favourite books to borrow and read.
- Ask them if they need anything from the shops next time you buy groceries.
- Say hello next time you see them, and ask them how their day is going.
- Feel free to do more than one and spread the kindness even further!
- Report back to each other in one week and share how your acts of kindness were received, and how doing them made you feel.
Family Habit Builder:
Every night at dinner, have each person thank another family member for something
they’ve done or said today, or give another family member a compliment.
DIBELS
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is a reading screener used to identify students who are experiencing reading difficulties. As reading is pivotal to learning, early identification of reading challenges supports early and ongoing intervention for identified students.
This year, all schools in the Cairns Diocese will begin to implement DIBELS as a tool for screening student reading ability across Prep - Year 6. Data from these screeners will be entered into a database called AMPLIFY, and teachers will then anaylse and use this data to inform their teaching practices. Consent for the use of Amplify was sent home recently.
DIBELS subtests assess the basic early literacy skills of phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, fluency and comprehension and are aligned with the Science of Reading. They directly assess the BIG IDEAS of reading and directly link assessment to instruction. The subtests are:
- Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) (Prep - Year 1)
- Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF) (Prep- Year 1)
- Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) (Prep - Year 3)
- Word Reading Fluency (WRF) (Prep - Year 3)
- Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) (Year 1 - Year 6)
- Maze (Comprehension) (Year 2 - Year 6)
There are different subtests allocated to each year level that focus on the skills necessary for their stage of reading development. See below for the timeline of test administration.
DIBELS will replace the use of PM Benchmarks. Students will no longer be given ‘a level’ of reading ability. Instead, DIBELS will give teaching staff information about whether or not a student is on track for grade-level reading success.
For more information about DIBELS, see the attached Parent Guide or go to https://dibels.uoregon.edu/ .
Happy Learning,
Chris Edwards
Our class of Preps were the lucky winners of the most Star Cards last term and decided that their award would be some ‘red play’ (free time to play games of their choice).

Another exciting week of sports has unfolded at St. Clare’s! Our dedicated students have been honing their ball games and athletics skills in preparation for the upcoming Athletics Carnival, scheduled for the second last week of this term.
Despite the wet and muddy conditions at Warrina Lakes during the Cassowary Coast Cross Country Trials on Tuesday, two outstanding athletes emerged victorious: Madison and Layla secured 1st place in their respective age groups. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to them!
But the excitement doesn’t end there. Madison and Layla will proudly represent St. Clare’s at the upcoming Peninsula Cross Country event, and will be joined by other qualifiers: Heath, Jonah, Saxon and Nina. Their determination and hard work exemplify the spirit of our school community.
Well done to Kade and Layla for making the Touch Football Peninsula team. Also to Eddie as shadow.
Next week, eight of our talented students will proudly represent St. Clare’s at the highly anticipated Soccer Gala Day. The event will take place at Castor Park in Mourilyan on Friday next week, where our young athletes will showcase their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship on the soccer field. Billy Johnston, Oliver, Jaxson, Kace, Henry, Warrick, Jaxon and Lincoln – You’ve got this!
2024 ST CLARE’S FETE
2024 Fete preparation is underway. This year’s fete will be held on Saturday 7th September. Our student performances will begin at 5pm and the fete fun will commence from 6pm till late. This year’s theme is “BEACH PARTY”.
Fete packs will be sent home this week with the eldest in the family. The pack includes lots of information, raffle tickets, stall roster, cake stall baking dates and other important dates.
The fete is our major fundraiser and St Clare’s is the only school in the community that still has an annual fete, BUT for this year's fete to be as successful as previous years we need YOUR HELP. We are asking that one adult from each family volunteer either before the fete with baking/cent sale wrapping, etc. or on the night, on a stall for an hour. As the saying goes, plenty of hands make light work. As parents we are all part of the P & F so any help you can give is greatly appreciated as the money raised goes back to helping our children in many different aspects of the school.
The fete is a fun night that is made possible by the Staff, parents and the community who donate so many wonderful prizes and of course our students, whose performances will be nothing short of amazing. Please let your family and friends know the date.
As the fete approaches, we will have updates in the newsletter and via Seesaw. If you need any further information, please contact one of the fete committee members:
