Dear Parents, Staff and Students
Congratulations to our students who participated in the Rugby and Netball Carnivals last week. It was a successful day for all and we are proud of all students for their participation and sportsmanship. Further information can be found in the Sport news.
Visiting Principals
Last week we had three principals from London visit our school. This was part of their visit to the Cairns Diocese where they also visited other schools and spent time with staff from Catholic Education Services to find out about our schools, our priorities and our approaches to delivering curriculum.
Staff update
We welcome Alicia Johnston to our staff for the remainder of this year in a Teacher Aide role supporting class and student needs.
We currently are advertising for a Part Time Teacher for 2 days a week commencing in Term 2. This position will replace Kaitlyn Marsilio who will be commencing maternity leave in Term 2.
Lent
We have begun our Lenten journey as a school and parish community. Lent is a time to take inventory of our lives and to see where we need to get back on track.
God of life:
You sent Jesus into the world to show us how to live.
Help us to embrace the example and teachings of Jesus, by spending time with Jesus, the living Word.
Draw us deeper into unity with you and our brothers and sisters, through our efforts to live in peace and justice with one another. Inspire and encourage us to be agents of the Gospel as we strive to be an influence for good in our world. We ask this through Jesus, the light of the world. Amen
Prayers for Gretta Berge
We continue to pray for the Berge family who are in Brisbane with their eldest daughter Gretta after a serious accident last Monday. Gretta is showing progress every day but is still in need of our prayerful support. Please keep Gretta in your prayers over coming weeks and ask our Lord to give her strength and healing. Your prayers are very much appreciated by the Berge family.
Professional Learning Update
Most of our teaching staff attended the TREWTH Conference in Cairns last Saturday. The TREWTH Conference is held annually as a service of the CES Identity and Outreach team. In addition to the Keynote Address, TREWTH provides a wide variety of workshops related to Religious Education, Spirituality and Social Emotional Learning. This year’s conference had a special focus on our First Nation People.
This Thursday and Friday I will be attending a two day Principal Conference in Cairns.
Bus travel
Please notify the office by 2:30pm if after school arrangements change for your child/children with regards to bus travel vs pick up arrangements. This enables us time to ensure the messages are passed on to teachers and children before the end of the day.
Best wishes for the week ahead,
Narelle Harney
Principal

Our Lenten Journey – Lent Year A Week 2 Prayer
God of the journey,
We pray that as we gather in this time today,
we will be nourished by your Word
as we work to transform our lives through your grace,
and become a greater reflection of your love on this earth.
We make this prayer in the name of Jesus, our radiant light.
Amen.
Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
Thank you to all involved with the planning, organising and support of our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast fundraiser last Tuesday. Together, we raised $102-50. These funds will be added to our St Patrick’s Day fundraiser, as well as Project Compassion collection box contributions and will all be donated to the Catholic charity, Caritas Australia.
Every year through the six weeks of Lent, Caritas Australia launch Project Compassion which is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of Caritas Australia's caring supporters, all in the name of justice and peace. We join the millions of Australians who come together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.
St Patrick’s Day (Green Frozen Cup fundraiser for Project Compassion)
On Tuesday, 17th March (Week 8) the Year 6s will plan and organise a green frozen cup fundraiser and students will be invited to wear green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day for the cost of a gold coin donation. Frozen cups will be sold at first lunch for 50c each. More information will follow closer to the date.
Project Compassion Boxes
Last week during the Ash Wednesday Mass, Fr Hilary blessed the children’s project compassion boxes which went home with a note late last week. If you feel you are able to support this initiative through the collection boxes with your child or with your children, please do so. For example, instead of buying a lolly bag, they may decide to put the money in the box instead. This is a great way of teaching your child/children social justice and how to be compassionate and show empathy. Anything over $2 is tax deductible.
Each week, students in each class are invited to bring in their collection box and add the money they have collected to the classroom collection box. This will then be taken to assembly each Friday to contribute to the St Clare’s collection box.
Fr. Hilary’s 80 Birthday Celebration
Today, 3rd March we will be celebrating Fr Hilary’s 80th Birthday (Father’s actual birthday is 4th March) with a cake for the students to share with Fr. Hilary at first lunch, followed by a shared staff lunch.
May the Grace of God be with you, Fr. Hilary.
Year 6 Caritas Just Leadership Day
Just Leadership Days are great opportunities for students and teachers to learn more about:
- what is justice
- what is leadership
- how to be a JUST leader
In addition to important leadership skills, students and staff also learn about Catholic Social Teachings and the role Project Compassion plays in helping reduce poverty.
This year, St Clare’s School is hosting the Southern Deanery schools tomorrow and we look forward to putting our charism of Welcome, Community and Hospitality into action.
Other significant dates in term 1 include:
Thursday, 18th March – Multicultural Day (further information to come)
May the Grace of God be with you,
Kath Kennedy
On Friday the Cassowary Coast Southern Netball and Rugby league carnivals were held at Tully State School and St. Clare’s. St. Clare’s teams and students performed fantastically on the day.
In the Rugby league both the under 10’s and 12’s sides finished runners up in their divisions. Highlight of the day was Peter Solien winning the Player of the Carnival award . At the conclusion of the carnival two district sides were selected to play Cassowary Coast Northern sides in the coming weeks. Congratulations to the following boys who were successful in making these sides
- Clay Chappel, Case Durighello, Liam Quabba and Jackson Solien in the under 11’s
- Jared Nash and Peter Solien in the under 12s
Unfortunately, no netball players were successful in selection in the Cassowary Coast South under 12 side but all of the St. Clare’s sides had excellent carnivals and won many games in their divisions. The highlight being the two St. Clare’s B grade sides who played each other in the grand final.
Our attention now turns to cross country and touch football to finish off this terms sport. The St. Clare’s Cross country will be held on Friday the 27th March on the school grounds. Students are busy preparing for this in morning lap running. Numbers at this have been fairly low and it would great to see more kids coming out on the oval before school to get ready for the carnival.
The Cassowary Coast Southern touch football carnival will be held on the 3rd April at the Tully State High School. All students in year 4-6 will be attending.
More information regarding these two events will be handed out via parent slips in the next couple of weeks.
Congratulations to Lucy Chilcott who competed for the Peninsula region at Queensland School Sport under 12 Aquathon Championships in Hervey Bay. Lucy had tremendous race finishing 41st out of 90 athletes and is super excited about competing in more aquathons and triathlons in the future. Well done Lucy !
We would like to wish Maddison Apap all the best when she heads down to Brisbane to compete at the Queensland State Swimming Championships on the 23rd to 25th March. Maddison will compete in the 50 metre freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly as well as the 200 metre breaststroke and individual medley events. Good luck Maddison in this huge program !
