From The Acting Principal's Desk
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term Three. It has been wonderful to see so many smiles over the past week as we all return for the term. While the lockdowns and the weather didn’t fully cooperate with many of our plans, I hope that you all had a chance to spend time with family and friends.
I’m sure many families will take advantage of the long weekend this week (Tully Show Holiday Friday 23rd) and are keeping everything crossed for fine weather.
Catholic Education Week
Next week is Catholic Education Week (Wk 3). This week is an opportunity for all 309 Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos.
Our Yr 4-6 students will travel to Innisfail to celebrate Mass with other schools in the Southern Deanery and stay for a short time afterwards. Prep – 3 Students will celebrate with a Liturgy at St. Clare’s. Further information can be found in the APRE News.
Prep 2022
Interviews with students and their families for Prep 2022 have taken place. We have very limited spaces left in our Prep 2022 class, so if you know anyone with a child born between 1/7/2016 and 30/6/2017 who intends on coming to St Clare’s but hasn’t enrolled yet, please ask them to contact our office asap. I have met some wonderful future students in past weeks and look forward to getting to know them further at our transition program in Term 4.
Damage in Car Park
Unfortunately, we have had some damage to cars in the car park. This seems to be caused by opening car doors onto other cars. When using the carpark please be mindful of those parked around you and if you can remind children to be extra careful when they are getting in and out of cars, it would be very much appreciated.
Grounds person
We recently advertised for a Grounds person to replace Trish. As yet we have not received any suitable applicants and this position will be readvertised. The position involves maintaining the grounds and gardens, as well as very minor odd jobs, for approximately 15 hours per week. If you know of anyone that may be interested in this position please let them know they can find further information online at: https://www.cns.catholic.edu.au/employment/
National Pyjama Day
National Pyjama Day falls on Friday 23rd July. As it is our show holiday, St. Clare’s will celebrate this day on Monday 26th July. Students & staff (parents are welcome to join in too!), are invited to come to school in their pyjamas. Closed in shoes are still required to be worn and pyjamas also need to fit in with the school’s Sunsmart policy. Anyone coming to school in their pyjama’s is asked to bring a gold coin donation. Students that do not wish to wear their pyjama’s are to come in their usual school uniform.
Best wishes for the week ahead and enjoy the long weekend,
Karran Burzacott
Acting Principal

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK IN QUEENSLAND
Catholic Education Week is celebrated annually in Week 3 of Term 3 and is an opportunity for all 309 Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. We are also celebrating 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia this year.
Catholic Education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. The theme for 2021 celebrations is A Spirited Tomorrow.
As part of the lead up to Catholic Education week, all students have been engaging with scripture and focusing on the parable of the Good Samaritan. This parable links to St Clare’s School’s identity of Welcome, Community and Hospitality along with our values of faith, love, trust and respect.
The parable of the Good Samaritan is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. It is about a traveller who is stripped of clothing, beaten, and left half dead alongside the road. Finally, a Samaritan happens upon the traveller. Although Samaritans and Jews despised each other, the Samaritan helps the injured man. Jesus’ simple message was to – ‘Go and do likewise.’
You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself – Luke 10:27.
This verse sums up the commandment of love as given by Jesus. The parable of the Good Samaritan is all about love.
St Clare’s students have also been learning more about the Good Samaritan Sisters who were the first teachers at St Clare’s and have been making the links between the parable and the Sister’s work in Australia. Leading up to Catholic Education Week, the students are learning more about the history of our school and about our patron saint, St Clare of Montefalco. At St Clare’s, we are fortunate that we have many families who have a long association with the school, some being third and fourth generation. The children may be able to share with you some of the information they have been learning.

Oral Language Session for Parents
On Wednesday 4th August, Prep and Year 1 parents are invited to a workshop on oral language development. This is a great opportunity to learn skills and strategies to support your child’s learning at home. Research shows that oral language development is closely linked to success in literacy development in the early years.
We are very fortunate to have Catholic Education’s Speech Language Pathologist’s Kate Giulieri coming to present this session from 9.00am – 10.00 in the Learning Hub. Please feel free to stay for a cuppa and chat after the sessions if you would like to ask Kate any questions. Please email Helen Andrews if you are able to come along.

During the School holidays on the 3rd of July, we had students participate as part of the All-Stars team in the Ken Hamill Cup against Tully State School. It was played as the curtain raiser to the A Grade game, with the All-Stars team coming away with a 32 to 0 win. Congratulations to all who were involved with a special mention to Case Durighello who was named man of the match. A big thanks goes to Mrs Chappel who managed the team, Anthony Emmi who coached and Adrian Durighello who was a trainer.
On Tuesday the 20th of July we have Amelia Solien representing Cassowary Coast in peninsula trials in Cairns for Rugby league. We wish her well.
