Dear St Clare's Community,
Welcome to Term 4!
October is the month of the Rosary which is a meditation on the life of Jesus and Mary and was developed as a breathing prayer. The name rosary comes from the Latin word rosarium which means “rose garden”. In the Middle Ages, Mary was often called “Rose” and the name eventually became rosary. In modern times Popes have encouraged Catholics to pray the Rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings God’s blessings on the Church.
Building Project
We are currently in the initial planning stages to undertake a small building project and upgrade. This project will include building a flexible learning area in the space next to the lift. This classroom has been in the pipeline since the building of the Junior Precinct. It will be a space for specialist teachers (HPE & The Arts) to use for lessons, small intervention groups, enrichment programs and for teachers to meet. It will also be very beneficial to have a ‘spare’ classroom at times when air conditioners or electronic whiteboards decide to take a day off. Also in this project will be the demolition and construction of the student amenities block and a refurb of the Tuckshop.
Clarity in Education
Last week, Helen Andrews, Chris Edwards and I, along with 15 other Diocesean Schools and Cairns Catholic Education Directors, Consultants and staff, spent 3 days of professional learning with Dr. Lyn Sharratt. We have been fortunate enough to work with Lyn over the year gaining insight and knowledge from her book, Clarity: What matters most in learning, teaching and leading. We are very excited about bringing our learning from Lyn back to St. Clare’s to work on improving our teaching practice and supporting our students to own and understand their learning journey. We will continue to work with Dr. Sharratt in 2023 and look forward to seeing where Clarity takes us.
Staffing Updates
Mrs Wall and Mrs Low have enjoyed some well earned long service leave in Week 1 and Mrs Zanelle Collins will be on leave in Week 2 - Mrs Korma Byrne and Mrs Jenny Crema will take the Year 1 class in her absence.
Teaching positions for 2023 are still being finalised and I will share this information with you as soon as this is done.
We are once again seeking a grounds/maintenance person. If you or anyone you know may be interested please go to: https://careers.cns.catholic.edu.au/home
Water Safety Program
Our water safety program will commence this week. Due to school camps happening this term, no classes will go to the pool in Week 3. The program will resume in Week 4. Year 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 will go to the pool on Tuesdays and Prep & Year 6 will go on Thursdays.
Prep Transition
This week we welcome many excited children to our first day of Prep Transition for Prep 2023. We will be running a 4 week program led by Mrs Gita Sima and Mrs Pauline Colombini. We all look forward to getting to know our 2023 prep students as they visit St. Clare’s each week.
Other events
As promised, Term 4 is going to be busy! In addition to Water Safety and the Prep Transition Program, Year 6 students spent the day at Tully High on Friday 7th October. We had a number of Year 5 students travel to Cairns for cricket. Year 5 will head off on camp this week and Year 4 & 6 will enjoy their camps in Week 3.
On Tuesday 18th October we have a whole school performance - BMX Trick Show, which promises to be exciting. Friday 28th October is one to mark in your calendar as it is World Teachers Day and also Day for Daniel and Crazy Sock Day.
St Gerard Feast Day
The St. Gerard Committee is holding the Feast of St. Gerard Celebrations on Saturday 15th October. The afternoon will begin with a Mass at 2:30pm. Please contact the parish office for further information.

Welcome Community Hospitality
It’s hard to fathom that we have actually made it to Term 4 already! 2022 is absolutely flying by and this term will be no different. Term 4 will see a focus on raising funds for those less fortunate through various activities. Catholic Missions is an organisation that St Clare’s has a long history of supporting and this term will see us holding a Crazy Sock Day in aid of Socktober (October 28). The Year 6 class is currently in preparation mode to host our annual Mini Fete (November 9) which is always a much anticipated event in the Term 4 calendar. The funds raised from these events will be distributed by catholic Missions to a third world country to aid children’s education.
In coming weeks, we will also begin taking collections for the annual St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal. Items collected will go towards making up hampers for local families in need over the Christmas period. More information about specific items requested from each class will be in next fortnight’s newsletter.
With Blessings

Roadways Behaviour Monitoring System in selected Queensland school zones:
We have been advised that selected schools in Queensland will be part of a pilot program involving speed cameras deployed in flashing school zone signs. Selection has been based on a risk assessment conducted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). We are yet to be informed that St. Clare’s will be included in this pilot, however, we pass this information onto our community as you may pass through other school zones in your travels.
The information below has been sent to us from MARK BAILEY MP Minister for Transport and Main Roads
In a world-first road safety initiative, new speed camera technology will soon target speeding
drivers at selected school zones across Queensland.
Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe. It is imperative drivers reduce their speed to the
signed 40 km/h speed limit and be aware of activity by students on or near the road.
Speed cameras will only operate during school zone times at the selected schools.
Parents, and carers dropping off or picking up students are urged to comply with school zone
speed limits. Those who slow down will not be penalised.

Jim Graham Cup
Thirteen boys from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Callendar Park in Innisfail at the end of last Term to participate in the Jim Graham Cup. The boys had been training in the lead up to the day during their lunch times and although they had a few injuries and were defeated on the day, they managed to continue to hold their heads high and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Congratulations to David Aspinall who was nominated as the Player of the Day for St Clare’s. A huge thank you to Mr Emmi for coaching us and to Johnny Clifford and Mr Nona for their support for the team on the day.
We are also very grateful for the transport assistance from Alice McNamara, Catherine Aspinall, Rhiannon Lizzio and Brendan Slattery as without them our attendance at this carnival would have been impossible. A huge thank you Mrs Chappel for all of her work with managing the team for this carnival. There is a lot of work put in behind the scenes to allow students to attend events like this and we are very grateful for all that Mrs Chappel does.

FNQ Regional Cricket Blast Finals
Six of our talented cricketers headed up to Cairns last Friday to compete in the FNQ Regional Finals for the Cricket Blast competition. The team consisted of six students from St. Clare's - Chase Frumento, Nollie Uitenweerde, Saxon Solien, Seb DiMauro, William Robertson and Jonah Wilcox; as well as two students from Mission Beach State School - Sean and Charlie.
The boys played very well and displayed excellent sportsmanship amongst their teammates and they came away as runners up of the B Pool Division. Congratulations boys.
A huge thank you Jake Robertson who coached, umpired and scored all of our games and thank you also to the parents who assisted with transport. It is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Kate Mason
