Dear St. Clare’s Community,
Happy Wellbeing Week!
As per usual in Week 8, there is no written homework for students to complete. I hope that you may have the opportunity to do something with family or friends during the time usually dedicated to homework. We are nearing the end of the term and the excitement for our fete and holidays is building. This can often be a time when students find it difficult to meet expectations. I really need to highlight however, how very proud we all are of the students at St. Clare’s. We have had a considerable amount of out of class learning this term, with some amazing opportunities to experience new things - Circus Workshop, Andrew Chinn Concert, Science Day and our Feast Day mass just to name a few. The engagement of students and the behaviour and manners shown during these events has been absolutely wonderful.
I was very fortunate to be able to attend the Ordination of the 8th Bishop of Cairns - Joseph Caddy - along with our school captains, William & Jace. Fr. Joby took part in this very special event and a number of our Parish Community were also present. Jace represented St. Clare’s with great confidence and reverence when he processed to the Sanctuary to shake Bishop Caddy’s hand and welcome him to the Cairns Diocese. The ordination Mass was very uplifting. The words spoken about Bishop Caddy during the service were that of a humble, caring and very positive man. I feel we are in very good hands and look forward to having Bishop Caddy lead the Cairns Diocese.
This weekend we celebrate and give thanks for fathers and father-like figures in our lives. I hope that Dad’s will be able to join us on Thursday for some fun and games. We wish all Fathers a wonderful day on Sunday!
Next week we look forward to our annual Fete. Staff and students have been working very hard on their performances and organising costumes. I cannot wait to see these on the night!
Mars Street Crossing
You may have noticed that our staff have been supervising this crossing in the afternoons. Tully State School staff are supervising in the mornings. This is because TMR have been unable to fill the position as yet. On that note, if you are aware of anyone that may be interested in this paid position please ask them to contact either Tully State School or TMR for further information.
Last week both schools were notified that we are not authorised to use a stop baton to stop the traffic. We have been instructed to follow the Marshalling Procedure from Main Roads. In a nutshell, we cannot move out into the centre of the road and stop the traffic. All crossing users must wait with the Marshall and be ready to cross. When there is a suitable gap in the traffic, the marshall is to check in both directions, that traffic has stopped, or in the process of stopping. The Marshall is to then direct pedestrians to cross when they consider it is safe to do so. This is causing some confusion as motorists are waiting for the stop sign to appear.
Can I please ask that you be extra vigilant, and be ready to stop, at the crossing when travelling up Mars St for school drop off and pick up, as the Marshall needs to remain on the curb with pedestrians until it is safe to cross.
Hopefully TMR will receive some applications soon and it will get back to normal.
Sent to Principal’s Office
Over the past two weeks I have had more students sent to the Principal’s Office! Not only is it great to see how proud these students are of their work, I am also amazed to listen to them explain their learning to me. It is very clear that our staff are working hard to support students to achieve success.
Chess Competition
Over the past 2 terms, students in year 4, 5, & 6 have been madly playing Chess in our annual competition. This year we had a record number of players. It took many games over a great number of lunchtimes to complete the tournament, finally the results are in!
1st Place - Jonah Wilcox (undefeated)
2nd Place - Christopher Parsons
3rd Place - Noah La Fauci
Congratulations to all students that participated in this year's tournament. I hope you all learnt some new moves and strategies, ready for 2025.
Please remember that this Friday is a Pupil Free day – August 30
Take care and blessings for the weeks ahead.

Faith Knowledge Community Respect
We are looking forward to celebrating Father’s Day with many of our dads at St Clare’s this Thursday from 1.30pm. We will have plenty of snags on bread for everyone for afternoon tea and a can of softdrink for our dads (sorry, students will have to stick with their water bottles). There are plenty of activities on offer for dads to move around the school, enjoying time with their children. The afternoon will wrap up around 2.40pm so if any parents are planning to take their children at this time, please ensure their classroom teachers are aware.
National Child Protection Week falls in Week 9 of this term. This year’s message is ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’. At St Clare’s, we are committed to safeguarding our children. This year, each class will participate in Australia's Biggest Child Safety Lesson, with the focus on enthusiastic consent. This program is facilitated by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and you can find a wealth of resources and copies of previous year’s safety lessons here.
The Professional Standards and Safeguarding Office are also offering a number of webinars produced by the acclaimed author, educator, parenting and resilience specialist, Maggie Dent. These screenings are generally only available to paying members, but the PSSO have offered a limited number of licences to schools.
To access the replays of these screenings, please use the links and log in details below:

GRATITUDE
Some benefits of practising gratitude are:
- After 21 days, you start to scan the world for positives.
- After 42 days you become:
○ More optimistic, energised & focused.
○ Less likely to get sick.
- You will sleep better.
- Anxiety and depression decreases.
A few quick and simple ways to practise being grateful are:
- Journaling; each night write down 3 things that went well for you that day or purchase a gratitude journal with gratitude prompts.
- Write a gratitude letter to someone special, telling them why you are grateful they are in your life.
- Have a family discussion on the way home from school or around the dinner table about the things that went well that day or made you smile.
You can purchase 21 day, 6 month and family journals from The Resilience Project website, if that is something you’re interested in.
Mindful breathing
Teaching children mindful breathing is a valuable practice that can help reduce stress, improve focus, and boost emotional regulation. Creating a calm environment is essential, where minimal distractions ensure the child's attention. Introduce the concept using simple language and engage them with playful methods like the "breathing buddy" exercise, counting breaths, or pretending to blow bubbles. Consistency is key, so set aside a few minutes daily for practice, integrating it into the routine, like before bedtime or after school. Encouraging self-reflection by asking children how they feel before and after the exercises can help them recognize the benefits. Patience is important, as it might take time for them to adapt, and modelling the behaviour by practicing mindful breathing yourself can be very effective. Keeping the practice fun and positive will help children develop this skill more naturally, aiding them in managing emotions and maintaining focus throughout their lives. Kudos to Shiloh and Vanora, who recently journeyed to Hervey Bay to represent Peninsula in Softball. Fantastic job, girls!
Our cricket stars also shone brightly over the weekend. Several boys travelled to Tolga to compete in the Cricket Peninsula Trials. The Cassowary Coast team, featuring Seb and William, triumphed in the Peninsula Championships for the third time in four years. Henry, Jaxon, and Darcy showcased their skills playing for the President’s XI Team. Everyone gave their best effort over two days of intense competition.
Congratulations to all our athletes for their dedication and hard work!
Yours in Sports

NO TUCKSHOP - FETE PREPARATION
Thank you to the parents & the community of the school that supported this years Pie Drive. The proceeds from this have been used to purchase a new portable speaker and microphone to replace the old and somewhat temperamental speaker that was being used.
As this system is portable, it can be used for many functions and events in the Montefalco like the Fete, End of Year BBQ and outdoor sports days.
Our next P & F Meeting will be held on Monday 28th October in the school library at 5:30pm. We welcome and encourage parents to attend.
